1) What is unique about Big Spring
United Methodist Church?
We have a rich and long history as a church that has served Charlotte for well over a century. And yet we are at a
new crossroads of building a congregation from a small number due to neighborhoods vanishing because of the ever-increasing expansion of the Charlotte
Douglas International Airport. This is a church small enough for each member to be known and loved, big enough to make a difference to one
another and the community, and strong enough to develop strategic plans for the future. If you join this church you will not be lost in a crowd but
invited in to join the vital ministries that are consistently developing. If you want to make a difference this is a great place to belong.
2) What time is worship?
The weekly worship service begins at 9:30am on Sunday mornings. There is a time for modest refreshment in the
Fellowship Hall immediately after the service which is followed by Sunday School at 10:45am.
3) How would you describe your worship service?
The worship services at Big Spring is traditional yet lively. We sing familiar hymns, pass the peace, collect prayer concerns for the
Pastoral Prayer, sing the Doxology and Gloria Patri, recite the wonderful creeds, and reflect on Holy Scripture during sermons. Adding to the spirited
atmosphere are the Children's Sermon and on occasion a "dialogue sermon" where the congregation participates in the Proclamation of the Word.
4) Do you have special services during the year?
We have an Easter Sunrise Service and a Maunde Thursday Service each year in addition
to our regular weekly schedule.
5) Why is there a sign for the Ghana Mission on the property?
The Ghana Mission United Methodist
Church shares space with us at Big Spring. We consider them as a "sister" congregation with whom we are privileged to learn and grow in God's Spirit.
Their worship service begins at 12:00noon and is open to any and all who would like to join a celebrative service rooted in the culture of Ghana. They
hold other meetings during the week as well at the church and share in the good stewardship of maintaining the sacredness of our property. Every 5th
Sunday we share an Adult Sunday School Class. And we are conjointly sponsoring the formation of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts as well as embracing the
outreach through English as Second Language classes.
